Does the seller have to be at the closing meeting?
The final day of the real estate transaction process is when the transaction actually occurs: on closing day. This is often the most exciting day in any real estate transaction and it can even be emotional for the sellers, as they will have to say goodbye to the home they lived in and start the next chapter of their life. One of the questions that many sellers ask is whether they have to be at the closing day. The reason that this question comes up so frequently is that they may have already moved far away to their new home or simply have other business to attend to that day. Therefore, the answer is no, the seller does not need to be at the closing meeting.
However, the seller still has to make sure all of their paperwork is signed, submitted, and approved by the real estate attorney before the closing meeting occurs. Many times, if the seller is a builder because the home is a new construction, the builder will not attend the meeting. The seller has to give up the keys to the house at the closing meeting so that should be accounted for as well.
